Ledger Live is the desktop and mobile companion app used to manage accounts, install apps on your device, and sign transactions safely. Before you begin

Prepare a private workspace and gather essentials:

  • Buy only from ledger.com or an authorized reseller to avoid tampered units.
  • Have a computer or smartphone ready and a stable internet connection for app downloads and updates.
  • Keep the recovery sheet (provided in the box) or a metal backup plate, and a pen to record your recovery phrase.
  • Allocate uninterrupted time — do not rush the setup.

Unboxing & verification

Inspect the package and device for tamper seals. Ledger packaging includes specific markings; compare them against the official guidance on ledger.com/start. If anything looks off, stop and contact Ledger support. Photograph package and serial number for records if you want additional assurance.

Install Ledger Live

Visit ledger.com/start from a trusted device and download Ledger Live for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS). Verify the download source and checksum where offered. Install and open the app, then follow the in-app guided setup.

Initialize your Ledger device

Create a new device

Choose 'Set up as new device' when prompted in Ledger Live. The device will prompt you to select a PIN and then display the recovery phrase words on-device. Always read words directly from the device screen.

Write down your recovery phrase

Ledger uses 24 words by default. Write each word in order on the supplied recovery sheet or a robust metal backup. Do not store the phrase digitally (no photos, text notes, cloud storage).

Confirm the phrase

The device will ask you to confirm certain words to ensure you recorded the seed correctly. Complete the verification before proceeding.

Install blockchain apps & add accounts

Use Ledger Live's Manager to install apps for the blockchains you want to use (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Install only necessary apps to conserve device storage. After installing, add accounts in Ledger Live to manage each asset.

Security and PINs

Set a strong PIN to protect the device from local access. The device will lock after a number of wrong attempts (wipe may occur). Optionally, Ledger supports adding a passphrase (25th word) to create a hidden wallet — use passphrases only if you understand their permanence and risk of loss if forgotten.

If you choose a passphrase, consider secure off-site storage of hints or distribution among trusted parties using formal procedures, but never store the passphrase itself with the recovery phrase.

Verify addresses & test transaction

Always verify receiving addresses on the device display before sharing them. Prepare and send a small test transfer to confirm the flow and address correctness prior to moving significant funds.

Backup strategies

A single backup is risky. Recommended patterns include:

  • Primary paper backup plus a metal backup for resilience against fire or water.
  • Geographical separation — store copies in separate secure locations (e.g., safe deposit box and home safe).
  • Shamir Secret Sharing (SSS) on compatible devices — split the seed into multiple shares with a recovery threshold (e.g., 2-of-3). This reduces single-location risk but adds complexity.

Recovery process

If you need to restore your wallet, use 'Restore from recovery phrase' in Ledger Live and enter the 24-word seed on the device when prompted. If you used a passphrase, you will also need to enter it exactly as before. Verify balances and addresses after restoration.

Troubleshooting common issues

  1. Device not recognized: Try different USB cables and ports, ensure Ledger Live is updated, and check device firmware status.
  2. Forgot PIN: Wipe the device and restore using your recovery phrase.
  3. Seed exposed: If you suspect exposure, generate a fresh seed on a secure device and move funds immediately.
  4. Firmware update fails: Follow official recovery steps on ledger.com/support and avoid third-party tools.

Advanced options: Multisig & enterprise

For high-value or institutional custody, consider multisignature setups that require multiple independent keys to authorize transactions. Combine Ledger devices with other vendors to reduce correlated failure risk. For enterprise-grade needs, consult professional custodial or HSM solutions and legal compliance advice.
